The name Omega Workshops is thought to have been intended to suggest the last word in design, omega (the Workshops’ trademark) being the last letter of the Greek alphabet. The company closed in 1919.

It was located at 33 Fitzroy Square in London, and was founded with the intention of providing graphic expression to the essence of the Bloomsbury ethos. Omega Workshop functions both as a survey of contemporary experiments in revolutionary and utopian dress, and as a laboratory for exploring alternatives to the current fashion system. Since the birth of fashion in the 19th century, counter-fashion—the practice of dressing to signal political solidarity—has been a site for critical intervention and utopian experimentation.
